Along with your training fees you will also need some personal gear:

You will need a mask, snorkel, fins and boots to take scuba lessons anywhere. These items cannot be rented. Scuba Fusion now offers a no questions asked return policy on snorkeling gear.

If you are not comfortable with the snorkeling gear in the pool - exchange it for another or take store credit. (Policy good for Scuba Fusion students only during the class/pool portion of the Open Water Course) It is very important to try snorkeling gear before attempting open ocean dives. Masks can leak, poorly fitting fins can cause severe pain and you will not be able to return it to Wilbur's Discount Scuba Palace after you have used it in the pool. It is impossible to know how this equipment will fit you until you try it.

Please ask us about course gear before you invest! It is best to purchase from the school at which you are taking lessons. Cutting corners by purchasing from "Cost Mart" will only set you back with a re-buy. Plastic lens masks and flimsy child sized snorkeling fins will not do for an Open Water Course. Below you will find useful information and some helpful hints for selecting your snorkeling kit. Or, come into the store and let one of our PADI instructors guide you.

MASK - PORTAL TO A NEW WORLD
Make sure that the glass is tempered and not plastic Hint: Comfort and fit should be your number one concern when trying on a mask. A quality diving mask will run anywhere from $45 - $75. Careful of cheap imitations. A Quality strap and buckle are a must for diving. Our experience with bargain masks is that cheap silicone straps break at the slightest tug and they consistantly leak due to poor molding. Not a good situation at 60' for a student diver. Snorkel
A snorkel allows a diver to rest comfortably at the surface despite swells. We also use them to snorkel out to a dive site. This allows us to conserve the precious air in our tanks while still being able to look down at things. They will cost anywhere from $12 - $50 depending upon features. The one pictured has a built in whistle and dry top. Pay close attention to the attachment point. It needs to be of industrial quality or one wave and say goodby to your new investment. Snorkels are required for the PADI Open Water Scuba Class. MORE>

Scuba Fins/Flippers
You can't go anywhere without good footwear. You will need a real pair of fins for diving. Scuba fins are different from snorkeling fins. Lightweight snorkeling fins will not suffice. Divers need real propulsion because tanks and weightbelts are heavy. They range from $50 - $150. Again watch for flimsy imitations. A broken buckle in a surf zone is a very dangerous situation for all. MORE>

Neoprene Boots
You will need a pair of 5mm or 7mm thick neoprene high top boots for diving in cold waters such as Monterey. 3mm or thinner boots are fine for warmer waters. Boots keep you warm but they also keep your feet protected from cuts and scrapes. We carry a base model 5mm boot that has worked well for students in the past. However, if you feel that you may be susceptable to cold water then spend a few extra dollars for the 7mm you will be happy you did. MORE>

Gloves
Scuba Fusion provides its students with gloves as part of the student rental package. However, you may wish to pick up a pair of your own. A pair of your own 5mm neoprene smi-dry gloves will keep your hands warmer than rental gloves. For Monterey you will want 5mm gloves. 3mm or thinner for warm waters. You should always wear gloves while diving to protect your hands from the elements. MORE>
